Three things to check before you call
- Thermostat set to Cool, and set below room temperature?
- Check the breaker for the outdoor unit. If it trips again right after you reset it, leave it off.
- Ice on the copper lines or the outdoor unit? Turn the system off and let it thaw. Running it frozen can damage the compressor.

What usually causes it
Failed capacitor
The outdoor unit hums but the fan or compressor won't start. This is a common hot-weather failure.
Low refrigerant from a leak
Cooling fades over days or weeks, and ice may form on the lines. Refrigerant doesn't get used up, so a low level means a leak.
Dirty condenser coil
The outdoor coil can't shed heat, so the system runs constantly and cools poorly.
Clogged condensate drain
Water backs up near the indoor unit, and a safety switch may shut the system off.
Frozen evaporator coil
Usually caused by low airflow or low refrigerant. The system has to thaw before it can be diagnosed.
Contactor or fan motor
The outdoor unit doesn't respond when the thermostat calls for cooling, or the fan doesn't spin.

Why is my AC running but not cooling?
The most common reasons are a dirty filter, a dirty outdoor coil, a failed capacitor, or low refrigerant from a leak. Check the filter and thermostat first. If those are fine, it needs a technician.
Should I turn my AC off if it's frozen?
Yes. Turn it off and let it thaw. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor, and it can't be diagnosed until the ice is gone.
